Alternators

What is the correct 'size' for a 1984,  1800cc DX engined cabriolet (if that makes any difference?). Mine in making a distinct whining sound from it since the belt was tightened up. The garage said that the bearing are worn.. is that right?

Cheers, Dan

Hi,alternator is probably a 55 amp my GX and diesel have 45 amp bosch units,my citigolf has a 65 amp fitted,
The bearings do go,if you buy a new one try and get a bosch remanufactured unit or something of similar quality.

Hi dano,my 83 GX has the origional bosch alternator and starter motor,my 83 diesel also has the origional alternator and starter,i only buy bosch or lucas units when i replace them, delco remy units are good quality too, when i say remanufactured i mean almost every part replaced exept the casing which makes no odds, reconditioned in birmingham means a clean up and a coat of spray paint  8O
which means my customers get the benefit of loosing there cars twice!
Thats why i am always booked up.
cheers Bert

German French and Swedish I found did the best deal for an exchange unit.
It cost me a total of around ?60.00.    Lucas electrical garages can replace the internals, like diodes etc if they are gone, which is sometimes cheaper. There is one in Yeovil Somerset that I used. But if the bearings are going aswell like mine were change the whole unit.  4 years is poor, my last one had done 21 years and 140k . I must get a medal from the club or something.

ps    Having the belt to tight is a sure way of wrecking those bearings !

Blimey 4 years is awful!

Especially as it is a genuine unit! My advice is be careful on how tight you go with the belt, as it can put mega-pressure on the bearings!
