you should always (but most people dont,) run the cables on oppostie sides of the car, I usually run the power cable down the passenger (through a grommet behind the fusebox,) side and the phono, rem and speaker wires down the drivers side. Thats the first port of call.
you can buy interference suppressor boxes from hellfrauds etc and these plumb straight into the power feed to the stereo. Which is another point. I find with mk1's that the stereo wiring isn't really up to modern stereo power needs and they are prone to overheating and cutting out. Try running a length of fused (fuse to the battery end) wire to the stereo power feed, and an earth lead straight to the earth "flower" above the fusebox, or behind the dash if that one is full. There's usually one slot free at least.
if you still have interference it could be the amp itself is not broken, as a mate of mine had one that actually allowed you to listen to the alternator spinning through the sub!!! once we changed the amp it was fine!!! They have built in noise suppression circuits so this could be the cause.
