Alternator issues.

Hey guys,
I need your mechanical minds to help me solve a problem…

Battery check reads 12.something on the multimeter,
Start the car and it drops to 11. Then I think Alternator is stuffed!
Give it a rev, let it come back down to idle and it stays reading high 13's. Alternator is working..NO?

Any help much appreciated

does the battery light come on with the ignition? if not the blue alt wire isnt connected somewhere, without this the alternator wont charge.

None of the lights on my dash work which doesnt help…however the blue wire is connected to the alternator and to the + side on the battery using a connector. Hasnt been touched since owning it, apart from removal of the battery for charging.

Car drives for about a week, mostly day driving so no headlights…breaks down whilst driving.
Charge the battery and it goes for about the same period.

that'll be why then, fix the dash else the alt wont charge!

Really…
Would have never of thought thats why!
Ill have a look at it, any reason why my dash would be dead?
The speedo works as its on cable obviously, you reckon the circuit has gone I know it can be a fault on a few golfs.

check pin 14 gets ignition live, thats the one with the black wire, and check red wire on pin 6 is live.  pin 2 is earht, worth lookin at that too. does the clock work at least?

The digital clock does work, along with the speedo.

The fuel gauge is dead, along with temp, warning lights (oil, battery, indicator etc..), and tacho.

I definatly know the black wire has nearly 12v coming through when ignition is turned on, and a few others. Ill check pin 6 and 2 to make sure.

If these have power, would it be the instrument cluster thats broken?

All the dash switches have power and lights, blowers, radio etc.

ok the live & earth are fine if the clock works, try pulling the fuse or battery -ve for 30 seconds, that sometimes brings em to life. if you deffo have 12v on the black wirte wiuth the ign its probably new clocks time :(
