aftermarket rad fan has 3 spades..but i only have 2 wires

evening all..

have bought an aftermarket rad fan for a mk1 golf cabby 1.8 gti….

it has 3 spade connectors on it… but no info to what is earth… or live ect…

i only have 2 wires going to my old fan…a  red and a beige/brown one…

how do i know where the wires go on the new one…..
i bought the fan from gsf… and they also told me i needed a new connector and 2 grommits from vw main dealer…so orderd them too…fitted the new fan with the wires going to the same numbers… so 1 and 2 but the fan is not kicking in… have also  bridged the thermo switch and still the fan will not kick in….

so simply …. old fan had 2 spades … new after market one… has 3 spades…. help please.

many thanks

from what i have read on here…… its a 2 speed fan…. and the old one would of been a single speed….

all i need to know is what spades to connect the 2 wires too…. the red goes to the thermostat and back out again… and the other goes into the loom..

so i have 3 blank spades on the fan…. with nothing telling me what is earth and live….

thanks for ur help tho dude…

3 spades –> 2 speed fan. One of the wires will be earth, one will be +12v for the slower speed and one +12V for full speed.

3 options really:

1. Fit a 3 pole temp sensor into the radiator, eg like newer VWs (I know Mk3 Golf VR6 has one but I reckon loads of others would too).

2. Fit your 2 pole connectors to the earth and full speed connection on the fan.

3. Swap it for the right fan? When you say "aftermarket" is it really aftermarket, or a stock looking one but from a different model?

thanks for ur reply///

2. Fit your 2 pole connectors to the earth and full speed connection on the fan

=== how do i know what is earth and is the 2 speeds…. there are no markings on it… only 1.2.3 on the new plug… have connected the wires to the 1… and the 2… as they were on the old fan.. but it dose not kick in…

3. Swap it for the right fan? When you say "aftermarket" is it really aftermarket, or a stock looking one but from a different model?

i bought it from gsf….. and the new fan… is  now listed for the old fans part number as a replacement part…

2 minutes with a multimeter would tell you which is which; or just try it using bare wires from the battery, etc.

Or, send it back to GSF. They shouldn't be listing it as the equivalent part, if wiring mods are required. Fair enough if it just plugs in, but this one doesn't, you need to mess about with your wiring etc.

right then… just done a few tests with the mulit meter…

i have 12v (red wire) going to the thermo and when bridged it comes to the end that fits the fan as 12v too…

so i know the red wire is live…. and the cream brown is earth….

tried doing an earth test on the 3 pins on the fan… but nothing came up on the multi meter…

so still no closer to home :(

Phone GSF on Monday and get them to sort out the proper fan, or a refund.
