83 Mk1 GTI - Alternator Replacement

Post

I'm new to the forum, so firstly Hello to everyone.

I'm after a bit of help with my Alternator, basically its gone on the blink and need to replace it. There sems to be many variations of Alternators available. I have taken the part number from mine. Its a Bosch 0-120-489-008 K1-14V 55Amp. Does anyone have details of the replacement part and where to find one, alternatively is there a higher Amp version that would fit in terms of mechanical fitting and electrical connections.

Cheers, any help appareicated.

No 55amp ones though!

Do some searches on the part numbers, I think 65amp is standard for a GTI. Could be wrong though!

You might find an alternative.

55-90amp will work, mk1-mk2 1.6-1.8 8v lumps. many other vw and audi of the same era will go as well.

main thing to worry about is your alternator cable, if your car is old enough it may hve the 3 pin spade connector rather than ring terminals, if so and you end up with a later alternator then use a mk2 golf alternator cable. mk3 golf one works too but need to crimp a ring terminal n the blue wire alternator wire and splice a spade on the car end. you'll see what i mean anyway
