16v conversion

converted my mk1 gti to a 16. just managed to get it wired up. now it starts and idles but doesn't rev up. splutters and stuff
anyone got any clues?

I'm assuming you have connected the throttle, and its adjusted okay???? Can you rev it up by manually opening the throttle with your hand on the lever? If so, then it sounds like the timing's affected - you should have a vacuum and mechanical advance, if its the original distributor, not sure if the advance is controlled electronically on the Mk2 setup. You can check this with a strobe.

throttles connected. doesn't rev up from the valve. electronic egnition through the ecu. souds like a timing issue, but we've adjusted it and its still doing it.

Hmmm, could be a number of things. Have you checked that the timing is advancing with vacuum advance when you open the throttle? May be worth getting a vacuum gauge onto the inlet manifold, it could be that you have a restriction somewhere, like a collapsed pipe or the fuel distributor's air flap is sticking on the body.
