1.8 gti alternator - whats the biggest output available

Following a rather cold wet and dark drive back from E38 today ive decided to replace my elderly alternator. Its going on an 1983 1.8 GTI Campaign. I would rather go for the highest output for those days like today where i had the lights on, rear demister, fans on full, wipers, stereo and sat nav all on at once!

You will find that your alternator will be up to the job its your headlights lights that will be dim ?

Cure fit a modified relay and loom for the front headlights see

The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

If not buy a Diesel rated item , should fit .

thanks for the input, i have a ampmetre VDO gauge in the centre console, with every thing on its in the red with a low 11 volt output. Im guessing its not just the lights?? From a practicality point of view i would like to fit an HID kit to the standard lamps which are only a few months old and not that dull but not that bright either (like my mate Doug!) So im guessing an alternator upgarde is the way to go for now. Anyone running a diesel one or know if they fit, also is the passat one comaptible and for sale?? Many thanks..................

Upgrading the alternator won't help with your dim lights though. You need to do as Chudd suggested and fit a new loom & relay. Makes a world of difference.

I have a 90amp alternator fitted too. Not sure what it was from though. Got it cheap on ebay.

Thanks for the advice but my lights arent dim, theyre fine, i just thought that if the reading on the ampmetre was less than 11 volts it would be taking juice from battery and ultimately would cut out? What would a healthy alternator display? will any old 90 amp one fit??
