1.1 Intermittent Wipers!
Hey,
I have a 1.1 and i was fed up with not having intermittent wipers! After an evening of fiddling and testing i found out that the relay out of a mk3 golf works perfectly. You need to take out the jumper in the relay box (position 10), and replace it with a 3b0 955 531 and then you have to take out the bit of plastic in the wiper stalks to give you the extra switch position. The relay is the programmable type, works perfectly and is a really worth while mod!
Thought this might come in useful!
James

Hi JF
This process is covered in the Robert Bentley Manual…complete with pictures.
iirc anything before 1980 (ish), including GTI's, that were not the "deluxe" model, did not have intermittent wipers (my buddy's '79 GTI and my '79 Rabbit CL didn't have them until I did the conversion as you describe.
Its an easy fix, init ?? takes about 5 minutes and saves you going round the twist when its only spitting/light rain
Cheers

Yo Simon
Yep ….that is all and Bob's yer bruvvers mudda (you do have to remove the little white plassy nodule that was referred to earlier (this then allows the switch to be moved "DOWNWARDS" to the intermittent position).
Actually, it was probably cheaper for VW to build just one loom and fit to all models…only having you buy the relay as part of your "posh" (GL or whatever) package.
You can probably get a good relay from a scrapper….I did in the US of A on my Rabbit CL
Cheers

Bentley boy (1979 Version) states that there are two different Relays 1975-1977 and 1978 & On
I see only one in ETKA::::: Part No 191 955 531
GSF shows only 1 (Pt. No. 93610) ?11.75 + VAT ('appen go see a scrapper or borrow one of your buddy to check out the functionality before buying a new one)
8/77 to 12/83
So I guess if your's is older than 8/77 yer on yer todd
Hope this helps (and I repeat…its a real pain not having intermittent…ask my Hooligan Elfie!)
Cheers
