Water pump for 1.5D

Post

Early big block similarities

Hi there chaps,

The water pump on my '77 1.5D motor has started to leak since I've been using the car as my daily driver, so I need to source a new one, which seems a difficult business considering the limited number of 1.5D models left, very few stockists carry any any engine bits for the early oil burner. My normally-excellent local motor factors tell me it's a discontinued part, and although Heritage list the pump they don't have any available.

Am I correct in assuming that a water pump for any early big block petrol lump will work on my engine too, as from my limited understanding I believe the early diesel engine was more-or-less a converted petrol motor? The engine code is CK.

Thanks in advance for any advice ~  Craig

Hi,

isn't it the same as the 1600 diesel? It certainly looks the same and the 1600 was fitted to Mk2 Golfs too. I'll just pop out and take a look…

Hi again,

I've had a look and they are almost certainly identical from the outside - I can't see any differences between my '79 1500D and an '88 1600D engine I'm rebuilding. The housing which goes on to the block is slightly wider on the 1500 but has the same fittings.

Hope this helps.

from memory the early diesel engines had a water pump with a bigger drive flange, and a different pulley,so if you use a later pump you will need the later pulley to fit
Bert

Thats not a rod knockin, its a diesel stupid! floppy top and 1 tin top

Thanks chaps, and no Bert, your memory doesn't fail you, the pulley on my original 1.5D pump is definitely different to the one needed to fit on my new replacement pump… On the lookout for one now
