smokey 1.6td

I have recently bought a golf cabriolet with 1.6td engine in it but its quite smokey, on idle its ok ish then it will occasionally put out a slightly larger puff but when you accelerate it leaves clouds, i would say its white smoke and it smells quite diesely. it has been sat for a couple of months but even after a little drive didnt seem to clear.
i hear pump timing is a common issue could it be this?

i would start with the pump timing

then the fuel screw could need backing off alittle

does it burn oil? or lose coolant?

it doesnt loose any coolant and i dont think its burning any oil, ive not long bought it, was hoping to get it mot'd but its a bit smokey, i am wondering if they have messed with the fuel screw in an attempt to make it faster as it has an aftermarket air filter and 6x9s and rca leads (screams boy racer)

Car is still at the yard of the person i bought it from (a good friend), unknown to me at the time his dad bought it off ebay back in april (i was watching it) and never did anything with it so i bought it as it was diesel. apart from the smoke it drives well, pulls well (well up to 50mph anyway, no mot so couldnt try on the road) i will check the screw tomorrow (ive googled it number 1 yeah?)

If it's white smoke and dieselly it sounds the opposite, this sounds like pump timing being retarded slightly! Sounds daft but it smells dieselly when it runs slightly lean. It'd burn your nostrils if it was too rich!

If you turn the fuel screw up, it will give out a big puff of black smoke before you're on boost and maybe while you're on boost if it's running LOADS of fuel but out little 9mm pumps tend not to be smokey once the turbo's going.

First thing check pump timing! As white smoke either indicates retarded timing  :D or a dead turbo  :(.
