differences between 1500 and 1600

Hi,

I've been looking to swap the 4-speed box on my '79 1500 diesel for a later 5-speed box for a while, and have finally found one locally, but the guy wanted to sell the running gear complete, so I came away with a 1600 engine and box, with ancillaries and drive shafts from an '81 5door. I'm planning on fitting the box initially, as it looks simple enough, but I could also fit the engine and box complete with little extra hassle.

As always, I was told it was a good running engine, and it is said to have done only 200k kilometres, but I have no proof of that. It doesn't look to have been abused, and there are still yellow paint marks on the pump adjuster screw, so I don't think it's been messed about.

It all looks simple enough, but there are a few differences I've spotted which I'd like to sort out first. Obviously I will be changing the cam belt, oil, filter and cam cover gasket before fitting, and I'll have a look at the clutch too…

Here's the engine as collected:

The air intakes are different - is there any advantage in the 1600 intake with bigger box? Also, where does the intake pipe route to? To the grill?

1500:

1600:

There are different temperature sensors on the stub pipes.

1500: Two wires to each side of the end stub.

1600: One sensor only on the end stub and one on the front of the block.

The brake pump seems to have a crankcase breather on the 1500:

With a pipe to the rocker cover too: Please admire the new top hose kindly purchased and sent by a fellow diesel driver!

On the 1600 there's a blanking plate:

Finally, do I have enough bits of the linkage to fit to the 4-speed lever, or am I missing something?

Any help greatly appreciated, as usual.

That 1600 engine looks very odd and out of a newer car

Reasons for this:

Air intake is odd I will post a picture of my 1600 d later on tonight

The Campbell cover is plastic this is strange as these were fitted to later engines

Does the new engine have a code on it?

The only difference that I know of between the 1500 and 1600 is the heads are a little smaller and the bore and stroke are different

You could just swop the water flange and the vacuum& breather plate over and then just dropthe  engine in place

OK, thanks for that. So just a couple of simple parts to swap.

The engine has 81 cast into the head, so I thought it was a date stamp, but it could easily have been changed. Almost all Golfs over here are diesels.

What about the airbox inlet down the side, and the breather to the cam cover. Are they better parts to use?

OK, here are some numbers:

Behind the pump, at the top of the head - 058 103 373D then 81 vertically.
To the right of the head (near the flywheel) again at the top of the head - GERMANY WWO and 0123 87 on the circular stamp.
On the rear of the block, low down - 1.6D

That's all I can see so far.

Any ideas?
