Rear window surround for 1984 cabriolet

Window surround needed for mk1 cabriolet as mine is well rotten 

How bad is it? Any pics?

The plastic is saveable but the metal is rotted out

I know, they all rust out. Secondhand ones get snapped up pretty quick (and might not be much better). A new one is about £200. If its metal it should be saveable with a bit of welding etc, I just wanted to see it to see if its better or worse condition than mine. Mine is similarly rusty but I'm going to weld repair it.

For example, are the captive nuts still there and supported reasonably well in position?

I'm going to get it off and have a good look at it today or tomorrow, I think I will be getting a plate laser cut in 1.0 mm steel and spot weld it on to the existing frame . It only looks like the edges are bad on mine . At a push it could be re used but why put rust next to a new hood and seal .

Its worth measuring accurately the thickness - mine is 1.7 to 1.8mm thick, so I've bought some 2mm box section steel and I'll carefully create sections and cut out the rotten metal, thus leaving little/no rusty areas. The only area of concern is where the captive nuts are, so I'll thoroughly rust treat this area and retain it rather than cut out and replace this bit, which would mean I might not locate the nuts in the right place etc.
