Gear Linkage

I'm looking for a the top solid bar that comes from the part that's attached to the bit on the steering rack and connects to the gearbox, seems the one I bought is too short, the one I have is 18.5 cm long and seems it needs to be longer?
It's for a 1.8 gti with an 5 speed o2o gearbox.
