Steering Coupling Required!!

Post

'89 Cabby

Recently purchased this motor only to find that it goes in a straight line when turning corner!! :banghead:                  Power steering had been fitted poorly to say the least!  After sourcing new steering rack it's become apparent that the existing coupling between rack and column has been chopped and welded, therefore too short for the original part.

Would like to keep the motor nice and original, so going back to basics…. no power steering - so if anyone has this part or knows where I can find one, please let me know where you/they are and how much you're after!!

Cheers in advance

Is it this bit you are after?
The UJ joint.

make sure you have the foam seal which fits on the bottom just inside the rubber boot as without it you get alot of noise coming through from the engine.
You should be able to see from inside the car, near the carpet.

Shop around for a UJ joint as £49 is a bit expensive for it.

Just noticed it sold, did you buy it?

Been trying to source for a couple of weeks, and this is the only one we've found, so just wanting to get motor fixed… so yeah, bought it!
Thanks again for advice though, very much appreciated by a non-mechanic minded vw enthusiast!

No worries, they do seem hard to come by as when I was trying to find one I did look into getting one made but then 1 pop up at a good price so I did not persue it.

I think you are doing the right thing going back to none power steering, as long as you don't try to turn the steering wheel when stationary you will be fine as when moving I can turn the wheel with just 1 finger and thumb and you get a better feel of what the wheels are doing when driving as I think that is what the Mk1 golf is all about, the driving experience.
