Description: As we all know the mark 1 GTI is getting increasingly more popular, and is regularly featured in classic car magazines. This popularity has lead to a rapid price increase with mint ones now being advertised for over £20k. I have owned this car for 6 years (since July 2010) as I have owned numerous mark 1 GTI's but I fancied the rarer series 1 GTI to sit alongside my other classics. This 1979 model was partially restored when I brought it and has had numerous work carried out during my ownership. I have some photos of the front wings removed and internal and external repairs carried out.
The car is used regularly and covers around 100 miles per year. I prefer to use the old cars and it keeps everything working. I know this car will start every time. I have taken the car to local classic car shows but I am not into the modified VW scene.
I know some people prefer the 1800cc engine but I find the 1600cc engine is more than lively and responsive.
The car starts easily and has had a new battery, plugs, HT leads, distributor cap and recent oil change. Also the radiator was changed a few months ago. Last year the cambelt was replaced and it had a full service by the VW main dealer. I know it is excessive taking the car to a main dealer but they love having it in their workshops every year and I am trying to get them to display it in their showroom.
It is an easy driving car despite no power steering and is still responsive. All the gears select easily (even first). Original 4 speed gearbox. The battery is new and the car was serviced in 2015 and had a new cam belt installed by VW main dealer.
The car was in original condition when I brought it but over the years I have replaced the front wings with NOS wings. These have been professionally painted plus localised paint repairs carried out where required.
4 new tyres (well a few years old now but covered limited miles)
Interior wise the car still retains its original 3 spoke steering wheel, dashboard and tartan trim seats. Headlining is mint. Door cards and parcel shelf intact and not cut for speakers. Original radio.
The car has old MOT’s and invoices to back up the low mileage of 75,000 miles.

Original VW service book stamped upto 1987 with 23,000 miles Original VW wallet and books
8 previous owners. Log book in my name.
It has the screw in filler cap, sag pile carpet, tartan interior, 3 spoke steering wheel, correct alloys and all the original features of the series 1 GTI.
Non sunroof model.
insurance is £117 per year with an agreed value of £8500 in 2014
New fuel pump in 2011 at a cost of £281 Brake overhaul in 2012 at a cost of £238
Has a selection of old tax discs
Loads of invoices for service parts
Price wise I know these cars are rare and are a sound investment. They are rarely for sale. I would like offers around £12,500 to reflect the fact this one is low mileage with loads of history and £1500 worth of main dealer invoices in the last few years.
All offers will be considered providing you view the car first.
