MK1 Golf Shell - Project, Full Cage, New Panels, No Rot

Post

Unfortunately for sale I have MY 1983 Mk1 Golf C 3-door shell. I must state this is going to be a large project for whoever takes it on, however most of the time consuming work has already been done to it. So it’s originally registered as a 1.1 in Alpine white and the V5 is present. Back in January I bought the shell with all panels and glass present and planned a full rebuild. I got rid of the front wings as they were rotten, and the front panel, as it had a dent in it where the handbrake cable came off and the car rolled into a bollard. There is no damage done to the chassis, it’s still straight, there was just a hefty dent in the lower valance so I chose to replace it. I have the repair panel and it will be fitted before the sale. There is also no tailgate or bonnet as I planned to run carbon items. As you can also see, I cut out the roof, it previously had a sunroof which is not only useless for a track based car, but it was also rotten, so I measured accurately and cut it out leaving enough room to bond on the carbon roof which I also planned to buy.

The car has had a full roll cage welded in, including rear hoop, door bars, bracing between the rear turrets, dash car, and I also had it gusseted to the roof to make up for there being no bracing there as it previously had a sunroof. It’s made from the correct grade of steel and has been welded to a particularly high standard by GDF Steelworks. I’ve stripped the footwells of all sound deadening and under seal, and they’re currently back to bare metal. I’ve also welded up the heater hole on the scuttle, cut out the scuttle panel (retained the VIN number section) and removed the driver’s side engine mount from the chassis leg as it needs to be flipped for a big block engine.

There were various rotten parts on the shell, all of which have been addressed and repaired to a very high standard using all panels from VW Heritage. The fuel filler hole has been replaced, as have the inner and outer rear arches on both sides. There was also a repair done to the passenger side sill at the front as it joins to the footwell. The front panel is not yet welded in place but will be before sale; this was also purchased from VW Heritage brand new. So it’s essentially a fully rust free and fully caged shell ready for a new carbon roof and paint.

Included in the sale is:

  • A full set of green tint glass
  • 2 doors with all window mechanisms
  • Mint dashboard (black, uncracked etc.)
  • Clocks (with rev counter)
  • GTI Rear Beam with ARB
  • Standard Rear Beam

  • Orange indicators (brand new)
  • Hubs
  • Wheel Bearings (brand new)
  • Seam welded/powder coated wishbones
  • Steering rack
  • Genuine Hella Tail lights (good condition)
  • Genuine ‘Rabbit Fuel Injection L’ badge from America
  • 16v Upper/Lower Inlet Manifold
  • 16v ECU
  • Fuel Tank

Car is located in Pulborough, West Sussex (not far from Chichester/Portsmouth). It’s at a point where it can be lifted up and carried by 3 or 4 people, 3 of us managed it before the cage went in anyway.

Genuine reason for sale is that I’m not in the best financial situation to be able to build this at the moment due to still doing my Engineering qualifications, and would prefer a project that’s a little less ‘involved’ and maybe start with something a bit more complete be it a mk1 or mk2. I’m unsure what shells tend to go for, especially considering this is properly caged and has had all the body work sorted. All in so far the car owes me little under £2k, obviously I’m not getting my money back, so would like £1.1k ono, given that it’s going to need the carbon/fibreglass roof which can be bought from LWS Design at £650, fibreglass ones considerably cheaper, so it’s not as if they’re hard to get hold of.
