working out production number / serial number

Hi, Does anyone know how to work out the production number for a Golf.  i have a 1989 convertible and want to get a new vin plate and i believe the serial number from that year is detailed on the tag.

any help appreciated

If you have the sticker in the boot still you can work through the figures in the picture. Failing that use the VIN under the bonnet. 

So in the photo example - 

45 = 45th week of the year
4 = 4th day of the week
8 = not sure
063 = number of vehicle off the production line that day

Thanks for the info.  in the VIN tag there is a vertical number (6 digit) on the left hand side on the tag - what does this number indicate ?
