You need to register it the following January and then you don't need to pay for tax but you still need to apply for it and no MOT needed but I would recommend getting the car checked over as it's a good way to check everything is working like the brakes as you can't check them at home. If you are in an accident and your car is not road worthy you may get the book throw at you and possibly invalidate your insurance so for peace of mind it's worth getting someone else to look things over.

My 1978 Scirocco is 40 years old this year so I’ve been looking into it, I’m going to talk to my local garage when my Golf goes in for its MOT in a few months to find out about cost etc for a MOT/ check over of the Scirocco.

Don’t get me wrong as I am all for an easy life. However the no mot rule is just stupid. So many cars from the 80s will survive as some sort of piece of cr?p and become a total liability.

However I do like the no tax piece a lot.

I missed out by a couple of years when the government moved the goal posts when car over 25 years old used to be road tax free. So glad it's now on a rolling programme of 40 years old.

Like you I think no MOT is a bad idea……

Yes crazy, think it's to align us with some EU policy on classic/historic cars. The problem being that then they start saying that you can't drive into cities or only use at weekends or have to have a catalyst retro fitted etc it's the thin end of the wedge ….

It's inventible that some scrotal will abuse the system and wipe out a bus stop full of school kids and cause a backlash against older cars.

Good job we are leaving the EU or are we staying and just changing the name of everything?
