What would you pay to strip wheels?

Post

Im lacking in money so plan to paint and polish my wheels myself which will take some time but to save some time I thought about having them stripped back by a powdercoating company near me. I know they do a standard wheel stripped and powdercoated for £30 so i was surprised when they told me that it would be £20 a wheel to just dip them and sand blast them! I was expecting maybe £10-15! and ive got 8 which i was going to do so that would be £160 before paint costs! so i was wondering if thats an acceptable price or should i try and bring them down on the price?

Cheers,
Matt

Sounds quite a lot considering it is only an extra tenner for powder coating, maybe a good excuse to get some bead blasting kit? :)

I get charged £10 a wheel for a strip and blasting

That price seems a bit much

Well in that case I'll go back and ask again, as they are very close so would like to use them, thanks

It also depend on what size wheels you have

They're only 15's butshe didn't ask that so hopefully they might come down on that price, if not I'll have a search around. The woman also said that the need to be dipped and blasted if they have been powder coated as the powder coat will only come off with chemicals which I don't quite believe  O_o

I have just paid £1.50 an inch for strip blast and powder coating from CAS powder coaters based in Bradford……. £90 later I have a great set of BBS RA's. I have used these guys for years and they are top quality..

You could always do it yourself  with a wire wheel then wet & dry to a final finish. I have done this loads of time.. takes elbow grease and patience but worth the result knowing its your all your work.

£1.50 an inch is more than what i was quoted! I have started to strip one wheel but it has got its original powdercoating plus 30+ years worth of paint on top of that! and there are 8 wheels to do! After doing two of them partially by hand its much quicker and easier to get them blasted, i will still have a lot of work to do by hand polishing them and painting them! so its still mostly all my own work

Nice thread.
Btw i think i need to send my rims down to UK since here in Norway it cost 130£ to blast and coat 1 rim, so 520 £ for a set, + another 400£ for polish.

so if it cost like 5 to 30 £ i will save money even with shipping cost for 100£

Wow thats extortionate! I really must be tightfisted not wanting to pay £20 to strip a wheel!

Anyone know how dipping / blasting would affect a diamon-cut finish? Just bought some wheels that are a bit of an odd mix - painted between the spokes, diamond-cut fronts and clear powder-coat over the top. They've been kerbed and the powder-coat's coming off so ideally I'd be able to strip off just the powder-coat and repolish them without having to start from scratch…

I use Starchem Synstryp, £30 for 5L. Used maybe half a litre to fully strip a set of 4 bbs rm faces and dishes to bare metal. It's got Dichloromethane in it (the stuff that used to make nitromorse work) so pretty evil but it works wonders when combined with a pressure washer. I managed to get 3 coats of silly thick paint fully off and down to perfect bare metal after about 3 or 4 applications as getting into the nooks and crannies of the wheels is a right PITA!

Got it down to this after 1 coat and 10 minutes of waiting then pressure washing off.

Yeah I did hear about that stuff on ed38 and fancied making an order, and thinking about it it probably is my best solution as a litre should cover all 8 and still work out cheaper
