Just wondered what you think is the most desirable and best mk1 out there?

In my opinion it's the right hand drive series 1 gti

I am fortunate to own both of the above. I was reminded of this when my insurance renewal documents came through yesterday and almost gave the postman a hernia

I would add really early examples, 1976 GTi and 1980 GLi also, or a sorted GTi Engineering or BRM converted car.

The 1976 gti without a doubt but if you can get your hands on a 1974 early production model in Concours condition now that would take some beating for me!

There was a 3dr L in red for sale last year not 10 miles from me.
First registered in Austria the 1st of October 1974, 2 owners and I know it was built in the first week of July that year.
Certified Concours by the VW museum Germany and with less than 35k on the clock.
FSH and everything since it was built was and still is done by his local VW Dealer who sold it new!

It could have driven it away for £8,000 but at the time I didn't have the cash to hand and wasn't going to borrow money at any interest rate. :banghead:

Should add a guy I know where I live (he owns a driving school) has a 1980 GLI from new and has done about 40,000 miles in it. :)

S1 GTI is top of the list. I think I'd agree with Rajan, that the BRM or GTI Engineering ones are more appealing than standard. I've no desire for a GTI earlier than '79 as they were LHD, and can't be enjoyed the same way on our roads.

However, there's still a corner in my heart that craves a black '82/83 Turbo Technics mk1…

I'd Love a 16s or a S1 GTi, i also had a lovely S1 GLi in Bronze, it was very nice, its just a shame you cant get the correct period repair panels, like the correct Front panels or wings. at least ive not seen any lol
