Retrim Dilemma - MK1 Original or MK7 cloth...???????

Post

With my interior being some what tired, usual drivers seat bolsters and faded all round the MILLION $ question I have is…

Do I retrim the lot (seats & door cards) as per factory with cloth supplied via the very friendly europeans at werk34 or….  go left field a wee bit and have a retrim in MK7 cloth…???

I would have the side/bolsters/surround of each seat re-trimmed in black cloth to complement the MK7 design and replace the carpet with a black version.

Is this too far from 'restoration'…??

Without being rude. Is it a special edition cabby/early model or normal gti. If normal then live a little I say as you are using the same seats if someone in the future wanted to convert back no big deal. However I would personally go for a more subtle pattern but I am boring like that. No matter which way just make sure whoever does it does a tidy job and it will always look nice then.

Take into consideration the rest off the interior such as carpet and door card colours.
If you can find  something that goes with the blue then great go for it. That way you don't need to spend more.

If it's a restoration then ideally it should be factory OEM all the way.

You can buy new cushions but they're not cheap.
I bought 2 when I re did my seats, made the world of difference.

If you took the old seat covers off then you could sell them as people want the material to repair their's.

That is the question, old or new, the choice is yours.
I recently changed mine over from white, to tan.
I sprayed the knee-bar from white to black.
While it isn't OEM, it is still a viable match.

In the Archive Section I have a few how-do-I-do-that's for seat cover removal.  I also have a few threads on repair of your seat bolsters, yes I could of shelled out big monies for new bolsters, I decided on repairing mine.

It has been about a year and a half since I have changed over, including a Canvas top (tan) because white while sharp, is a royal PITA (PAININTHEARSE) to keep clean.

I like the cloth covered seats, but I loved the ones in my Diesel Bunny (Velour) cool in the summer and warmer in the winter…. That Velour held up for the 300K miles and 20 years….Even the old flat bottom seats and backs on it didn't break down either….

I'm going to stay OEM and restore to as she left the factory.

Having read many interior project threads and visited 3 interior firms it's the easiest, cheapest and more likeable route to take.

So the kind Europeans at Werk34 have my money and I have 2 metres of original spec cloth en route to Blighty.

Car booked in for the interior repairs mid July.

Thank you everyone for your input very helpful and much appreciated..!
