Reproduction tailgate seal advice

Post

Hi all,I need to replace my tailgate seal and was wondering what peoples opinions or experiences are with the reproduction seals. My concern is that the tailgate may no longer shut or latch correctly. As I've heard reproductions seals causing issues e.g. doors and side windows but not heard much about the tailgate seals. Any advice welcome. Thanks

I have a reproduction supposedly OEM quality tailgate seal and as you say it does not shut correctly. I have have to slam the tailgate to get it to shut, not the best idea i know but i been living with it until i can replace for a genuine one. I believe you can still get them from VW.

I have had issues when replacing oem seals with re-makes.

I usually have to adjust the doors or gates for the newer seal to either get it to latch properly, and or seal correctly.

It may be that you need to adjust the thing a tad, as over the years hinges will move, as well as latches. Seals get torn or go flat, and you would possibly not notice the change in the way the hood gates or doors close.

Just because it is a re-make, I have seen some a bit wider, or thinner in the profile and have had to make adjustments as need to ensure proper fit.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Thanks both for your help. In the end I went for a genuine item from VW Heritage. The tailgate shuts correctly with no adjustment needed.
