Should my early GTI be converted back to road use?

803F9B9F-3C2F-4CF2-95E3-E79892E34B57.jpeg Hello, I've been a relatively (in)active member of your club for a while, mainly just reading occasional posts but very interested in what's going on around these cherished cars. I've owned mine for around 25 years now and together we have quite an interesting history. Basically I'm an engineer and racing driver and have mildly developed the car to the point where last year it became a championship winning car having won the classic VW Cup. Now I plan to retire her from racing and enjoy her again as a road car. She's a late '79 / early '80 GTI and I Still have everything apart from the drivers seat. I just thought I'd let you guys know from an interests sake and perhaps you might offer any advice, firstly should I keep her in race ready trim or should I return to road going (near) original trim.? I'm happy to share information about her history.
Yours, Nick. 51519E97-770E-46CC-A40C-36578040C144.jpeg 93F999EE-86FB-4C66-B3CB-715C0F21DA21.jpeg 7B171457-2A73-420F-B71A-4D62884521D7.jpeg

Race or Road

First of all. I love it.

Do you have another track toy? If so then this will keep you happy when the itch appears again.

For road then they are always going to be worth more money original/near original. Springs, cams, exhaust etc don’t really devalue them too much from a standard road going version.

Easier on the spine at weekends when on road going shocks

I tend to see 16v engine swaps take value of the mk1 vs an all original but maybe that’s just me.

If I could have a weekend track car vs my weekend road car then some weekends I would but others where I’m at the pub or visiting a show then I love the attention the road car gets. Now if I could have both - then I would be divorced

I would say do one or the other - a fast road car but a road car (as fast as a mk1 on an 8 valve engine can be) or an out and out track car. Caged triad cars are generally not for me.

Also you get to do your own build thread on here showing the conversion from race to road. I must admit I prefer working on mine to driving it and that’s what would appeal to me.

Ultimately it depends on which itch you need to scratch.
