Mk1 Golf GTI Reverse light Switch

Now Working Lights

I bought a reverse light switch from VW Heritage about a year ago as mine were not working. When it arrived it was the wrong one, well not the same as the one that was in my '83 GTI. After about 5 mins I gave up and put the switch in a draw and forgot about it…Until now.

As my MOT is due next week I decided to tackle it again, and not sure how I managed it but I have adapted the 3 pin type to fit the 2 pin type. Firstly I fiddled with a multi meter until I got a circuit between  2 pairs of pins, and found a pair that worked.

Hopefully with some pictures you will see from the pictures what I mean. The old one at the bottom showing the 2 sets of connections.

The new one at the top I found a circuit between 31-3 and 15-R.  So \I then carefully pulled back the rubber boot and exposed the plug and accordingly moved the connections to the corresponding pins, Like this.

This is how the connections were when I pulled the rubber boot back.  The bottom 2 are the reverse wires. I used a set of small tweesers to push a small tab down and pull the wires out. The Pic below shows how I connected them in the new switch.  Result is Working Reverse Lights !

That's about to change - they're coming in to new MOT rules as of 20th May.

Reverse lights will have to be checked then.

Good job on getting the switch working
