Year would help, I would suspect on a CIS that you have leaky injectors.
I would pull them out and look at the spray pattern and if they residually drip drip… drip.
I would also suggest a complete tune up with new plugs. NKG work really really well.

£20 petrol for 30 miles…. can you not smell petrol every where?
Is there's holes in the fuel filler neck and you are pouring petrol on the floor when filling up?
Might be worth looking in side the fuel tank via the panel underneath the rear seat.
That is some poor MPG, is the car running lumpy on start up or difficult to start?
When was the car last serviced, new spark plugs, HT leads, dissy cap , rotor arm etc.. ?

It's a 1987. It does smell a little bit like fuel but always has fuel tank is solid as I had it out at the begging of the summer filler neck has no holes n like stated there is no fuel leaks. Car starts fine every time it does cut out once after about 5 mins then when u restart it it's fine but it's always done that to. It was servised about 8 months ago new plugs leads arm and cap even had a new coil. It's really pi**ing me off. Thank you inadvance for every1s help

What colour are the spark plug tips, grey or black?
Have you had the mixture checked at a garage or info from last MOT if so do you know the CO?
Around 2% CO is what you want.

Settled In
jst before mot mine was running ok after a weber carb rebuild..
BUT it has a manual choke and I pulled on it a bit too much rupturing the diaphram.
this caused fuel to leak onto the manifold.
SO it failed.
new kit purchased and refitted diaphram and no probs now
although its in body shop I will be careful in future not to be too keen to choke it..
(but gti wouldnt have choke ?? would it)?
