Trying to find car owner
Hi there - I'm not the owner of a Golf GTI Mk1 at the moment - but I used to be- a 1983, reg no A222TYL. It was the Campaign model.
I bought it second hand back in 1984 as the second owner, from a dealer in Chelsea (the first owner was a "Sir"!)
I had it until 1989 when I traded it in for a Mk2 GTI 16V.
I have regretted selling it ever since and would dearly like to track down the current owner to see if he/she will sell it to me.
The DVLA website says it is "SORN" so it's out there somewhere!
Tried to get them to tell me the owners details (or pass on my request) but they, understandably, refused.
So, are you the owner? Or do you know who is?
I am about to retire and would dearly love to return it to its former glory.
I have a picture of me driving it in the 80's but I can't figure out how to upload it - I don't use Photobucket.
Many thanks.

Welcome Andy
That's a nice story! I hope we can help you find it. The reg number does look familiar to me but I can't picture the car yet.
What colour is it? I can then have a look through some old photos of our annual shows to see if it's about

A222TYL is black (or at least it was in the 80's!) with the usual red trim & P Pirelli wheels.
I even made up a Campaign badge and stuck it over the rear tailgate key hole - but I don't suppose it is there now.

You have to fill out a v888 at the post office and send it to dvla with y you want to find the car. As your name was on the logbook they may pass your info on to the current owners it's cost 5 pounds.

That's EXACTLY what I did do! - I filled in V888 - send off to DVLA with the fee - 2 weeks later they returned all of it i/c the cheque saying they cannot give me the details, or pass on the request to the owner.
That's when I came to the Mk1 Golf club.
Can anybody help?

It might sound daft but if it was me I would send a v888 form again, you never know they might just tell you this time.
Got to be worth a try as its only £5. Try rewording the form as I'm sure it would be a computer that gets it and not a human, there must be a key word that made the computer say no.
If not try and ring DVLA and ask them WHY NOT!!!
I really wish you all the luck in the world in you're quest to find it.

Unfortunately wanting to trace the owner of a car you used to own doesn't come under one of the reasonable causes for you to request the information as far as the DVLA are concerned. You can try, but I don't think you'll have much luck.
The best thing you can do in my opinion is to post this question to as many motoring forums across the internet as you can, and possibly even the letters pages of magazines like practical classics. It's quite a distinctive numberplate with the "222" in so someone somewhere might recognise it and put you in touch with whoever owns the vehicle, you never know.

I've looked through my old photos from early meets of the club and can't see it sadly.
Ade lhasadreams may be able to see if it's listed on the register at all?

I've found it! My old VW Golf GTI Campaign - A222TYL - is alive and well! - see pic
The owner is restoring it from the ground up - he has had it for 14 years but other projects have taken priority - the Golf is now No.1. - but he still thinks it will take another 12/18 months to finish.
I went to see it this week - it has had a good respray and there are lots of new parts waiting to be fitted.
When it's done I'm going out in it with him and will try to persuade him to go along to shows as I think it will be a winner!

That's great news and a lovely story.
The fact that you persisted when most people would give up is a credit to you Sir!
So Andy you have to finish of this great story by telling us how you managed to track the car down in the end!
