Good day, bit baffled

Post

Hi guys I've be had a superb day today I managed to  do a oil and filter change fit brand new shoes and fit new pads on the front, unfortunately I I purchased some discs from euro car parts and they didn't fit, there bigger than the discs that are currently fitted, I decided to fit just the pads .  It would seem that the discs and rotors are possibly after market, any ideas guys ??

I also need to source some brake shoe  retaining stings but can't see them on eBay, what's the correct name ? D49747E8-3580-422A-8C40-267E097CD263.jpeg 43FB5CA2-DACC-4292-8ECB-C6D07B8A61B1.jpeg

there are two thickness's of discs and pads. Fat vented GTI discs with thin pads and non-GTI non vented thin discs with fat pads.

The caliper carriers aren't big enough to fit GTI discs with non vented fat pad.

I have been given the wrong pads on more than on occassion….

Thanks to all for your help just to clarify, The rear brake springs were re used, but the spring retainers are a little rusted so will need to purchase these only.

The other odd thing which could really do with some help on is the size of the front discs, i purchased the supposed correct size of discs (239 mm )
Unfortunately when removing the old discs as per picture on previous post the size of the new discs where bigger, they wouldn't fit on the hub due to the caliper.

I managed to clean the old discs up and fit the new pads, this isnt ideal to be honest as i would love to replace the existing discs, could any one help, at the counter at euro parts there hopeless unless you give them a part number, at least then i can exchange for the correct type.

thanks guys

Just seen your eariler posts, looks like a 1.8 auto cabrio?

Not sure if my '87 1.8 manual has 20mm 239 vented "GTI" disks being a later 1.8 compared to eariler 1.5/1.6 carb cabrios. (car in a garage thats not easy to get to so can't check just at mo). Although autos might have stuck with 12mm solids?

How much bigger are the supplied discs compared to the one on the car? The pic does show the caliper carrier quite close at the top?

AFAIK all MK1s had 239mm disks?

The only diffrences being very eariler continental car had drums(!?)

239mm solids were either early 10mm or later 12mm,

GTIs and later cabrios had 20mm 239mm vented discs and thin pads to compensate for the 8mm extra metal on the disc

1.1/1.3 and diesels had different callipers/carriers and smaller square pads, but these also came in diffeerent thickness's as I once spent hours trying to fit some on a MK1 Diesel Jetta…..

GTIs and later cars had the VW MKII(?) calliper and carrier, these could take either solid/fat pads or vented/thin pads

So much for mass production based on standardised interchangable parts…..
