Future proof MK1

Post

I am drowning in idea's for Spaz the mk1 Cab but i cant seem to get past the idea of throwing out the bottom end thats still in it and putting something else in it's place.
Now lets make a couple of thing clear 1 Yes im crazy! 2 Im not looking for speed i have had an Evo5 and its meant for the track, a MK1 Cab is for pure :cool:Right now that is out of the way so far i have toyed with the idea of a solar bonnet and/or perhaps Dash, In conjunction with wind turbine generators acting as dyno's at the wheels!
Anyone know a good electrician!?:lol::lol:Seriously though im contemplating all sorts so any and all ideas welcomed but i do draw the line at a Prius engine!

Well having read that, try a Sinclair C-5 power unit.
That should be good for a laugh!

Just kidding but I will follow the post with real interest mate

Make it a back to the future car, just add a flux capacitor. It's like a big Y-shaped thing - how hard can it be!

MK1's have been going for 40 years now so I think they have all the future proofing they need. Just good servicing and maintenance and regular use is all you need I reckon

I took the new bmw I 3 electric car for a test drive and all I can say is that as a complete package it is very impressive . The thing out drags a e92 m3 upto 40 mph was like a jet taking off .
It's the way forward I tell yeah

Hmmm… Watch this space for Scotland going solo taking all the oil back and petrol prices going through the roof
Make no mistake i love speed and power but right down to the name fossil fuel it is running out hence the BMW and Porsche mentioned below being built!

It was that BMW in particular that planted the seed!!
Then made concrete by the top gear showing of the Porsche 918.

I am Bipolar and so full of crazy i have to let it out somewhere but this thought has been niggling me as 2 of my brothers are the same and one is an aviation engineer and the other a CAD wizard one is 19 the other is 17 and needless to say both unable to find work due to 5 billion applicants per 1 job.
The way i see it, It would be rude not to abuse my position of big brother to get them involved hahahahaha

Sounds good to me - would be great to see you come up with something new.

I can imagine you on the show scene parked up with all the 20v conversions, you'll have something electric under the bonnet

I have just visited the BMW site for research (Nothing what so ever to do with considering one of their engines! (Its all lies there not even square! )

Found this and it is also proof that they are not giving you everything they can deliver by making exterior l.e.d's an optional extra!
Further more the way they describe the eco braking with a dyno coming into play when you lift off the accelerator sounds an awful lot like wind turbine generators strapped to the wheels to me!

Electric Motor:
The electric motor of the BMW i3 is perfect for use in urban areas, delivering 125 kW/170 hp with a torque of 250 Nm. The full torque is instantly available from a standstill - a feature of electric motors - and does not need to be built up first through engine speed, as it does with combustion engines. This makes the BMW i3 particularly agile, with impressive acceleration. It will take you from 0 to 37 mph in under 4 seconds and to 62 mph in only 7.2 seconds (7.9 seconds with Range Extender). Equally impressive is the nearly silent driving experience

Lithium Ion Battery
The energy supply that drives the car, as well all the other vehicle functions, is provided by a specially developed high-voltage lithium ion battery, which sets new standards in terms of energy efficiency. The intelligent heating/cooling system ensures that energy performance (and, in turn, the vehicle's range) are less affected by temperature fluctuations than you would expect with batteries of this type. This makes a significant contribution to both the performance and service life of the cells. The BMW i3 comes with an 8 year/100,000 mile high-voltage battery warranty as standard, along with the 3 year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty.

The battery can be fully charged in up to 8 hours with the supplied charging cable. By using the i3's standard 32Amp AC Fast Charging, common in home charging and public charging solutions, charging time of the i3 can be reduced to less than 3 hours (0-80%).

Intelligent Energy Management:
To deliver optimal range in every driving situation, BMW has focused on low energy consumption electrical components during the development of the BMW i3. So the interior heating system saves up to 30% power compared to a conventional electric heating system for example. Energy-saving LEDs are used for the interior lighting and are also available as an option for the exterior lighting.

The eDrive also lets you brake with the accelerator pedal. If you take your foot off the accelerator, the electric motor switches into generator mode and feeds the energy gained from the motion of the wheels back into the high-voltage battery. This energy recuperation generates a braking torque that slows the vehicle more effectively and pays back in terms of energy savings.

Im not sold on the recharge bit! My aim is to remove the need for ANY form of recharge!!!
Who want's a car thats going to run out of steam slap bang in the middle of the fast lane!!??

Any more thoughts on this?

I remember, a few years ago, seeing a VW Polo that had been converted to electric motor drive.
They had used an electric motor connected through a clutch to a 5 speed gearbox I think.
You could put it in 3rd and drive round town without changing gear or using the clutch to stop/start and when you wanted a bit more speed you could slap it in 5th and go for it.

Shame it only had a 30 mile range!

At a guess, with a bit more development and the new battery technologies that have come along since, it wouldn't be too difficult to double that range now.

If I only had a 30 mile round-trip commute every day I would seriously consider it!

Don't think a Mk1 would be the same with something futuristic under the bonnet - when everything is zero emissions you'll need something to remind you of the good old days.

It always makes me smile when I am up early for a show, I jump into my Hybrid Lexus, stick it in electric mode so I can move it out of the way of the garage without disturbing the neighbours, then start up my Mk1 and wake up people in the next village!

I looked into an electric conversion as we have charging points at work and only 20 mile round trip per day!
