Hi,
Just after my fellow mk1 owners opinions. Apart from a 1.5 golf mk1 engine and been lowered my car is pretty much standard which apart from a change of wheels is how I intent to keep it. Now as the engine is i need of a bit of a freshen up do I rebuild the 1.5 engine I have or do I source and rebuild a 1.1 engine that would of been in the the car originally. I'm not looking to swap in any other engine if it's to be changed then it will only for the original engine
Thanks

I would keep the 1.5 personally. However if you want free road tax at 40 years old go back to the original size engine. Think that’s how it works.

Im not sure about this but if the engine is from the same era, does that not keep the historic vehicle and free road tax??. Also if fitting small block the engine mount will need moving…

I'm not sure either. Re the engine I no what's involved in changing it and that's fine. I'm more thinking as the car is fairly original if I'm going to the effort of doing an engine build do I do that on an original engine instead making the car even more original. Although I dont want to go to the effort of putting a 1.1 in if it's not going to give a very nice driving experience due to the lack of power. The 1.5 isnt the fastest but its still okay to drive and also keeps some of the original characteristics of the car, e.g. it's a carb engine, I believe it's the biggest carb engine in terms of cc fitted in the tintop and it's a still a mk1 model engine if that makes sense

If it was a 1.1 but now has a 1.5 from a Mk1 Golf, it will still be okay for MoT exemption.
AIUI historic tax is based on age alone, so any engine swaps would be okay.
