Changing clocks - slight variation

Post

I purchased some replacement clocks as mine had broken clips, lcd etc but I noticed the new ones are slightly different.

Old ones are top.
New at bottom (rebuilt after removing the blue faces) and changing mileage

Will these be ok to use as they are, or do I need to bastardise the two together? I presume they are from a later model.

Thanks
Dunc

Generally speaking ( tintop)  the top ones are 1.8gti,  bottom ones 1.6 gti , no idea on other models or if they will work,   hope so as I want to swap mine over..

The bottom set are out of a cabriolet Gti as it does not have the instant MPG gauge and change up gear light as it's not fitted to cabriolets.

They will fit but not sure if everything will work, you could plug them in and see what happens when you drive it.

Glad you got rid of those coloured faces as they are a bit naff…

Are you sure about that? My 84 Gti Cabriolet has the top set of clocks, mind you the change up light doesn't work, its possible they're not original.

If you take the Shroud off the old set and carefully pull the shroud off the tongue of the plastic, you will see each pin labeled (in German) as to what they go to.

Write the information down by pin location number 2 is ground, and 14 is power in.

Now do the same for the replacement clocks.

If they match up save for the upshift light then you should be ok.

If they don't, as you find some are in a different location, then your going to have to look at the connector on your car.  The connector is numbered as you look at it 1 is on the right and 14 is on the left.  The connector has 2 clips on each end.  Release the clips and your connector will open up allowing you to move the wires around to the proper place for your new clocks.

I would also take a 9V battery and test your water gauge and fuel gauge to verify that they work. I have a how-to in the Archive section that shows you how to do it.  Better to know if they work before you find out they don't.

Add a Piece of electrical tape pin side of the plastic tongue to tighten it to the connector, and splice in a ground on the pin2 (brown) connector side and run it straight to the X on the cluster bracket to frame with a sheet metal screw.

Yep there are how-to's in the archive section under Briano's helpful hints.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Bottom one's not 1.6GTI as 1.6s never had MFA trip computer.

Think bottom is later Cabrio GTI after VW got rid of the green econo cobblers of the early 80s

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

How hard is it to swap the LCD, plastic shroud and Speedo over because thats what is broken on my original clocks?

Which are correct for my car? It's an 85 cabriolet gti, c reg.

I picked up a MK1 GTI cluster last year with good clips etc to replace broken bits on my March 1983 GTI tintop with MFA. Everything works on my dash but the new one had broken tracks etc and was sold as spares so I just assumed I could unscrew and swap the bits that were broken on mine. When it arrived I noticed it was made by Motometer, whereas mine is VDO and when I separated the two haves and swapped them over I found that the bit that surrounds the LEDs in the middle stays on the front cover of the VDO dash but stays on that back part of the Motometer dash so was not interchangeable. All the components are quite different on the two dashes so it turned out to be a white elephant for me!
Good luck with yours.

Yes if you like. Don't want much for them. I'll check the condition and take a pic for you later.
