Bonnet latch mechanism modification

Post

So I came across this little picture and thought about giving it a go, but want to know if it's been done on here before or if it's a simple job?

Basically it's getting rid of the cable and turning it into a swallowtail kind of bonnet latch that pokes through the grill

This is the only picture I have, and it looks as if they've simply welded it on there, would this actually work? If you have any advise please let me know!
Second picture is a real one.

In theory, as long as your new piece of metal moves the relevant part of the mechanism in the same way that the cable would, then it should work.

The first one is a US spec bonnet latch, seen alot of people modding em recently, looks easy tbh once you get a latch upside down.

Il just stick with my genuine US latch

ive a spare latch if you want a cheap one to try on?

Haha kinda! But I doubt people who don't know it's there would even think of it!? Plus it's a cool little touch!

Until you come out one morning to find your bonnet open.  :o

  • 1978 MK1 GL 2 door with 2.0 16v ABF, twin 40's, Recaros, lots of suspension mods. I'll get it back on the road one day.
  • 1991 MK2 GTI 4 door. Was my daily doing over 1000 ks a week until it hit a truck. RIP. Got another one now and loving it!
  • 1991 MK2 GTI 4 door for parts.
  • 1998 Seat Cupra + another used as a donor for the MK1
  • 1999 Passat Wagon. Needs street cred but at least it's a manual.
