Does anyone own a KE area registered mk1? I'm trying to work out which dealer would have sold mine new, full reg is EKE 161Y, I've seen a couple of pics of other KE registered mk1's so hoping there'll be someone on here knows which dealer its come from.

EKE is Maidstone, mine is EKL and that's Maidstone aswell.
Maidstone is the main office for the Kent area. I think the last letter denotes what region it was sold in, my Golf was purchased in Broadstairs, I did have another car many moons ago that was EKE and I'm sure that was registered in the Thanet area aswell.

Thanks, I'm guessing there could have been a couple of dealers in that area that could have sold it new then, thanks for the info!

I've been hunting around for the original service/dealer documents that came with my Golf, annoyingly I can't find em atm but I'm sure there is a list in there of the uk or the South eastern dealers at the time.
I know JC Morrison were the Thanet dealers In Broadstairs, Canterbury would of had a dealership and Dover and Ashford aswell.
When I do eventually find it I will post it up.

Just had a look at a July 1982 VAG dealer directory and Maidstone was serviced solely by 'Maidstone Car Sales Ltd.', George Street & Upper Stone Street TN 0622/50821.
If there's any other towns nearby that might've had a VW dealer let me know and I'll check.
All the UK dealers of the time are shown, but they're listed alphabetically and I'm not familiar with that part of the world!

Found the Authorised dealer booklet (published October 82)
Here's the dealers for Kent:-
Whitehouse Bexley.
JC Morrison Broadstairs.
Westmoreland Service Station Bromley.
EuroCanterbury.
EuroCharing.
Hollis Motors Dover.
Hollis Motors Folkestone.
Maidstone Car Sales (Gillingham).
Whitehouse Gravesend.
Maidstone Car Sales.
K.J European Ltd Orpington.
JC Morrison Ramsgate.
Rawsons Euro Cars Ltd Tonbridge.
Rawsons Euro Cars Ltd Tonbridge Wells.
Wolfe Garage Westerham.
There's also St George's Garage Cliftonville (not sure when they opened but was pencilled in place of JC Morrison Broadstairs in my booklet)
I also found the service docs for the EKE reg Fiesta I had and that was purchased from Stormont Ford in Tonbridge Wells.
Here's a link to registration areas http://nice-reg.co.uk/info/area-of-issue-codes-for-classic-suffix-and-prefix-number-plates.html

Thanks for the information. Looking on the link it just says Kent for KE so I guess it could be any of those garages, narrows the list down though! Could really do with finding a previous owner who knows now…

Yeah I was sure a certain combination of letters denoted a different area in the county but I think that isn't correct, I remember back when my dad bought his first new car the last three letters were FKL and that was purchased the opposite side of Kent where my EKL Golf was purchased.
What I think happened was that dealers got allocated random combos of Kent reg plates cos my dad picked a reg from a sheet of say fifty plus all ending in FKL.
Good luck with the search, the previous owner will be listed on your V5 but depending on how many owners the cars had it could be difficult.

Thanks, I did ask the previous owner for any history on it but he didn't get any with the car, it's had something like 16 owners too IIRC

You could try the DVLA
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/v888-request-by-an-individual-for-information-about-a-vehicle
Write to the first few owners asking for info, it's a long shot but you never know? Even if you get nothing back it'll be interesting to see the journey the car has made through its life and the whereabouts of the first owner to get an idea of the nearest dealer.
