Guidance
Hi all,
it's been a long time since I have browsed the pages of this forum and since visiting VW festival this weekend I am after some help if I can. I am looking to sell my 1979 series 1 gti and have had numerous issues with tyre kicker eBay wallers. I was fortunate enough to get chatting to some very helpful gentleman at the show yesterday who suggested I post on here to create some interest. The car is Mars red and has 79,700 miles on the clock and a massive comprehensive history file. It would appear that it was ordered as some kind of special as it has an electric metal sunroof and did have electric windows and aircon specced from new. For which i have evidence of from it's first service in october 79. The car has been resprayed at some point in it's life and had the filler neck replaced along with both sills and some inner wing repairs carried out in my ownership since 2012. I have the original scirocco gt wheels also specced from new, all 5 of them and even a set of spare bolster foam. The only mods are a full ashley stainless steel exhaust system and some coilovers. It currently has a set of polished lipped BBS RA wheels on. It has mot until march 2018 and drives lovely. Where abouts should I be pricing this and is there anyone on here who may be interested in finding out more?
Sorry for the long winded tale but any response would be much appreciated
Regards Dan

Hi Dan and welcome to the club first of all.
Clearly you want to sell the car but you have no idea how much you want for it, well that surprises me personally.
From what you've said you've an interesting example there but I must ask you to read and abide by the club rules on Selling Cars should you wish to advertise it here.
Please note that we are not an auction website site.

By the way when filling out the template, the more info and photos you can provide the better but I'm sure you know that already! 😉

Take some time and study the market… search a variety of online classifieds, both current and archived, and see what these Series 1 GTI's are actually selling for. Once you have an idea of what they command price-wise, you can start to decide if it would be worth selling (the classic battle of head versus heart). That being said I've seen Series 1 GTI's for sale at £15,000 (I'm sure others have seen some asking prices that were quite a bit higher) and others in similar shape for £3,000. It all boils down to market value vs. personal value.
Good luck with the sale.
Good luck with the sale.

Just a thought but as it's a smart looking 79 GTI with a fairly comprehensive history, have you ever thought about putting it in the hands of a top classic car auction house?
Stick a silly reserve on it and see what happens!
By the way, what ever you do get rid of the boy racer window winders or anything else like it.

I have seen the ebay auctions, personally i would repair the roof rust before i re advertised, that is a pretty big job there, not something to be taken on lightly.

Apologies for the lack of response I have been away on honeymoon. I really appreciate the advice from all members, thank you.
I have had issues with silly eBay bidders backing out at the last minute or requesting to cancel the sale which has been very frustrating. Especially as none of them have even come to view the car and see how well it looks. Which may give the perception that the car is not as it has been listed which is far from the truth as i have tried to be as honest and open about every aspects and responded to all questions with additional pictures and info etc. Hence my requests for help on here. I have tried to advertise in the classified section here but it always seems to have issues when I make an attempt. Possibly as I'm on a Mac which I am not that familiar with. I will give it another go and see where I get. Thanks again for the advice all…. if anyone would like to contact me direct for further information so I am not cluttering up your forum then please email dan69jones@hotmail.com

You've not attracted enough points as a new member to post in the Classified Section.
You joined at the beginning of 2012 but have only made 3 posts!
Now I joined at the very same time and you are my 8,000th post exactly! 😂
I'm not sure but I think you need 150 points and according to your profile you currently have 55 but I'll check on that. Hairyarse
You could become a paid member and then you can post the car for sale straight away. Or write a few more posts and do it for free. 😉👍🏼

This post explains all you know if someone can't post in the Classified Section! ☺️ 👍🏼
View topic: Can't post in the Classifieds? - The Mk1 Golf Owners Club
So if you still want to advertise it on here it will only cost you 95 points more or donate £5, more than fair to access such a large Mk1 Golf focused market!

I've just restored one of these. Hard to find. The roof rust is a tricky one. Pretty hard to fix. New headlining needed too. So a big job. Might put people off. I'd still say it's worth 12-15k as is but it's finding the right person.
