Where is the gearbox code?

Post

I've recently been looking into getting a 5 speed gearbox for my mk2 daily and perusing the available 085 gearboxes at local scrappies. I can't seem to find the gearbox code most of the time, not even on my own 4 speed version. I had to deduce the ratios by matching the revs with the roadspeed (which then didn't match up with my GPS speed readout :ocf_emoticons__BangHead:)

On the rare occasion I find the code it will be stamped (barely) on the top of the housing where the casing meets the engine block imbetween the top two securing bolts. The rest of them have nothing  there and I've checked underneath too, clearing all of the oil and grime from all possible locations, but nothing.

Does someone have any idea whether there is an alternate position where the code can be found OR why some gearboxes have no code stamped?

Cars I've been looking at are mostly mk2 Seat Ibizas, Golf MK3s and Polos to try and find a suitable gearbox for my 1272cc 2G engine

Hi chap, I don't know if you've seen this website, but it's the holy grail of gearboxes.

I found my code on the bottom of my 020 gearbox.

Hope that helps.
