Didn't they come on some late model clippers too? Think I've seen on late mk2 drivers as well.

I'd stopped selling VW's by the early 90's so I don't know about the late Clippers but in the 80's what we used to do was this.
When we'd get a new Mk2 GTI in we would have the steels off straight away and put a set of BBS on and other dealer fit extras to load the price. (we never sold a bog standard Mk2 GTI or at least not without a fight)

Then we would put the steels on anything else we fancied, often it would be a used Cabby if we had one!

Yes I think you might be right as well, VW were great at using up parts on lots of different cars.  most mk2  GTIs and Clippers  didn't last long on steel wheels before owners upgraded, but when I see one today think they look so cool.

I had a set on my car as winter wheels as really easy to clean.
There should be a black line around your plastic hub cap, I used a marker pen to make mine.

(I did fit a new roof just after this picture)

Wouldn't have thought very much, only the value of the tyres probably.  The only Steel wheels that seem to be worth selling are are early Series 1 GTI and the G60's. Stick them up the loft if you have space and wait 20yrs.

I bought my set in a simular condition to yours with with 2 newish tyres for 2 just legal tyres for £30 as I was after a winter wheel.
So they are not worth a lot.
