Value of a restored Campaign

Post

We have all seen the Facebook ads and eBay listings for  "RARE"  MK1 Campaigns over the last few years, but just how valuable are they?

I know as a club we have a buyers guide which has a restored campaign at £2750 and an original concourse car at £8k, but should we increase these figures to reflect the current "market conditions"?

Every car TV show has referred to the MK1 GTI as the "original hot hatch" and now many of the restoration shows are choosing the MK1 too.

Do you own a Campaign, do you think it is worth more than £2750?

Are you looking to buy one and shocked by the range of prices (to be fair the gap between £2750 and £8000 is huuuuuuge")

I would love to know your thoughts.

Cheers
Matt

Hi
Projects seem to go for absolutely silly money these days, a vgc mk1 gti around 5k-7k or if you want to pay a couple of K more for tinted glass then its up to the buyer.  The amount of peops that still refer to there A reg mk1s gtis as campaigns but they are so heavily  modified i don't see the point in referencing the as campaigns anymore.  I remember seen my first campaign many years ago in black it looked the dogs doolas with the spotlights & tinted glass but nowadays as long as its vgc it wouldn't matter to me personally when buying a gti. It is confusing I thought they only made a 1000 campaigns but there seems to more now than made lol

Hi matt

I've spoken to Hairyarse about this just the other day as I'm very close to selling mine and will prob be putting a sign in the window at Stanford hall. As for price it's a minefield, I think all good mk1 prices are on the rise because people see good quality classic cars as an investment now, do campaigns maybe cost a bit more yes but if you compare yomp's GTI and Keith's campaign or jezzers these are amazing and I would pay the same price for yomps as the other two all day long!! These are just examples as there are lots of great mk1s out there you just have to look at the shows.
I'm still deciding on the price for mine but being honest I would prob want now about the £13500 for mine or close to, some people will prob say no chance but how much does it cost if we are honest to restore one to a good original standard a lot more than that if done properly.
Cheers

As mentioned above prices for most Mk1's is all over the place no matter what they are or condition.
But they all seem to be climbing fairly rapidly over the pass five years including here in Austria.
Especially for the top of the range models.

I'd say the 'Asking Price's' over here have rocketed in the just the last two years by about 30-40%!

Yes the 40th Anniversary plays a part in that but even so.  ;)

At the end of the day it's worth what someone will pay and human nature is to get as much as possible for anything, but a good unmolested car will be worth more every time

Swerve you will get those scratches in the back window sorted first tho yeah?

I was looking around at "nearly new" car prices yesterday as Susie wants a newer car and I couldn't believe just how expensive they are, so I started thinking could I restore a campaign for less….and it looks like I can!

I dont think I will get anything as good as yours Swerve but then again, if I have all of the "Campaign" parts, the rest of it is just MK1 parts, and with a bit of cleaning, plating and powder coating, most things can be made new again!

I am fairly confident that once I have done it, it will still "feel too old" for the missus and I will have to sell it, so I am just trying to gauge what it would be worth…..to set me a budget for restoring it!

Lol @mattnsusie no scratches will stay as I've said before it's like an original wall left showing in an old house that's been restored 😜
So my old girl and I have grown to like them shows a bit of character 😍

Having owned a few in my time and always looking for real mint Mk1 over the last 25 years the true value of a Campaign is all down to real service history , low owners and low miles and most important how straight is the car ( as untouched from factory as possible)

Going by how much interest has increased over the last 10 years in the classic car world I think you would pay up to £25,000 for the right car all day long , one that's been restored can also be of value if the owner can show clear evidence of the cars great shape before resto and prove the restoration is of volkswagen quality or better.

As we all know hidden and visual rot is the mk1's real poison, bad previous repairs,  bad restorations and over customisations will kill a cars value.

I know I will never refuse a genuine and original straight Campaign depending on condition for 5-10k  , a show standard resto ( with proof of pre condition) car for 10k or that once if a lifetime under 30,000 mile 1 owner full service history original paint car for 15-25k

So In all Matt yes I think the guideline prices have to go up a far bit mate

My search continues :thumbs::thumbs: ( pm me if you have a campaign that meets any of the above;);)

Without reading everyone's comments above, I for one think that good mk1 prices are so high now that it's priced the normal man out the game.

Just my opinion and that's how it usually happens with all classics but a shame all the same.

Top end mk1's for over £20k is way too much for the average working man to pay for a toy.

I would imagine myself and many others will move on to other cars with more realistic everyday prices OR keep the mk1 that we already own as we don't want to pay the current going rate.

Here, here Chris.
Even over the last few years in Austria I've seen the prices of all Mk1's go through the roof.  :o
Although there's not the same level of interest as back home!

I think if I was in the market today I'd be looking closely at others for example, a BMW 323i convertible.

So it is a real shame that ordinary people especially the young are being priced out of the market!

It's happening to lots of cars now, I was shocked at prices asked for the three door Sierra Cosworth now, £30k seems common place for an average looking car and even seen one up at £60k!

I was looking again last week at prices of what realistically would be the car I would sell my GTI for and get - an Aston DB7,  all seem to have gone up £5-7k in last six months, think I have missed the boat on this now, although if prices are on the up, at least it will offset the huge running costs….

I reckon the next VW to start to go up will be the Corrado VR6 - for nice original ones -

Don't get me wrong I wish people all the best when selling their cars and hope that they get what they desire BUT I bought my Sportline for £3k and sold it for £7k after spending 5 figures on it but loved spending every penny and as it was over 5 years so then it is manageable.

Would I go out and spend 5 figures on a mk1, NO I wouldn't as its a toy for me and I'm sorry, even though myself and my wife are successful in life, I could not justify spending £10k+ on any car as a Saturday car.

What's even worse is younger people ( in their 30's ☺️ )wanting in on the scene, what chance have they got 😁

I sadly see that my desire for a really good Gti will never happen as for me it would be a near £10k outlay and then many pennies getting it to my standard, so it will never happen.

I also think people's asking prices are optimistic at the best at times.

I got a really good price for my Sportline and it sold within 12hrs without advertising. Could I have got more ? probably but I was happy with my value but I'm now seeing decent examples of Clippers etc for nearly as much ???

Mike and Richard I agree with your comments and Sciroccos are where I would put my money as you can pick them up for good money.

RichardHall I love Corrados 😍

Also agree, if I where to sell my gti i think that would probably be me unable to join again at a later date due to rising prices :( , also when these mk1 golfs become tax exempt or don't even have to be mot they will rocket in price, but eventually the market will have to dive as no buyers.

Porsche 944 or 205 gti are probably next to go out of reach, fords are probably ready to crash in value as they are now garage ornaments you couldn't actually pay that kinda of money & drive the thing flat oooot

Hi, thought I'd say hello.. I've just come back to a Mk1 after around 10 years off!.. Spotted THV , my old car!! I painted it, changed the plastics, sourced the radio and gauges, somebody has obviously restored the rest.. Looks sweet. Just thought I'd say.. Nice work!!
i bought the car originally to run through the winter and keep my E30 M3 out of the salt, after I painted it I couldn't bring myself to use it! Anyway…. I'm now back in the fold with a black clipper.. Not a campaign but I like it..
