Other than the GTI badges what are some other giveaways that it's a GTI?
Here's a pic of the cabby and the details sticker

The DX code started for 1983 model year cars and the 9A g/b code for 1984 model year cars
1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet
The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

The DX engine code (1.8 injection) and and GTI 9A gear box code (not to be confused with the 9A "bubble block" engine code) seem to confirm it built was a genuine GTI.

Thanks for that, super helpful!
Would you happen to know how common the black fenders were? Most mk1 cabbys I've seen have painted body color fenders.

Around 1985 there was a Christmas Cabrio in white and around 1987 "Quartett" special editions came in one of 4 colours inc coded bumpers.
Post 1988 "Clipper" kits with big bumpers were all colour coded.
There may have been other special editions and in the last 40yrs many have been messed with and/or rebuilt to varied specs
