There's a few specialists…and parts stockists that rebuild there own cars and sell on. Funkstar ( Mark carter) crazyquiffs and then Andy Day also has cars available at times. Think for reliability issues then engine upgrades to mk4 or tt would help. But then again dx engines are pretty much reliable I'm not having engine issues..mainly fuel injection and electrical, was there's sorted engines running fine at 80k to 180000 miles.

On the drive
T25 Diesel…sameoldblueshi£ (currently under resto)
Rocco gt2….1990 secret 2…(currently under resto)
Mk4 99 1.8t indigo blue Gti with 43k miles
Caster 93 clipper JH Green cabby
Snowy 91 GTi White cabby( sat waiting for inspiration)
Myvalver 89 GTi Grey mk2 16v
Yuppy Flu 91 GTi Flash Red Sportline

I would imagine if there is such a thing as a company who professionally restores Mk1's their prices are going to be up there with the top priced cars. Simply because they are going to calculate the man hours in the price!
Private owners tend to be a little more realistic but not always. 😂😉

I'd strongly recommend you buy from an established member of the club but first you should define a rough price range. 👍🏼

Might just save you being bombarded with cars that are of no interest to you what so ever! 😉

Not with that sunroof!

Only my opinion but for every day use, assuming no engine conversions, I would get the 1.8, 1.6 is a little low geared for me. 1.8 is hardly high geared.

Yea true but it does look bright.
Strange no photos of the interior but I'm just being picky.

The after mark sunroof does knock it a bit but from what I see and the market at the moment with the prices so high on the face of it nice car for money.

To late now. 😕
On to the next! 👍🏼

Wasn't that long ago that it was difficult to get a good price if it had a glass sunroof.

Turn key restored GTi specialist sales?

Looking on eBay there is

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112520656297

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272802112445

Both look good cars on the face of it. Less than what you posted so could pay for any small rot issues inner sill or arches and be driving a nice car.

I looked at a spit resto on my mk1 by a specialist company in Cornwall and you are in the realms of 15k plus. Just not financial sense at that money has to be done for the love of it and having your own spec for that cash.

If wanting it for a long time buy it in the winter they are a little less money. By the way the mars green mk1 on eBay has been there for a dogs age so could be a deal on that. It on for just under 10k but could be brought for less is my guess.

Thanks for the replies, I hadn't properly noticed the questionable sunroof on the Mars red 1.6… otherwise lovely though.

Heart very much says Mk1, though (sacrilege here?) head keeps looking at this….

Very nice looking Mk2 I might have even sold that one. 🤔 😂

It's your decision at the end of the day.
These are climbing in price and it is a very fine VW Golf but it's just not the 1.

If you buy a 1 or a 2 just be satisfied with your purchase and most of all enjoy the experience! 👍🏼

I'd go with the mk2 all day long.

I own a mk2 and a Mk1 and have owned a few of each previously too.

Mk2's win every time for me…. I am massively fond of Mk1's of course, but they just aren't as good all round.

Backinblack  may I ask the specialist in Cornwall you contacted?

highwayman

TBH (and I'll probably be hung, drawn ansd quarted for this!) the mk2 is probably a better car overall from the mk1 as it was designed to be a GTI rather that a beetle replacement with a bigger engine chucked in it. For an every dayer I'd probably go mk2…… with a mk1 for the weekend of course!

I believe the old saying goes, buy the best you can afford, in this case just fins the best one about. Plenty to choose from if you have the budget and are willing to travel.

Enjoy the hunt!

Maybe it's Devon. Restoshak. Beautiful work but beyond my pockets. Near Exeter. They do payment plans and will hold the car for say a year working on it as the money comes along. Spoke to them last year and seem a real decent bunch.
