Hi
I'm about to get some wheels refurbished and need to buy some new tyres for them as the ones on there won't fit under the arches.
Some thoughts please. I am thinking 185/45/15 but could go 195??? And could go 50 profile also.
Going for Toyo tyres so all sizes are a available
Need to order them tomorrow morning so anyone who can help with what 15 works well on 6.5 J 15 wheels would be a great help.
Thanks

I've put 195/50/15 toyo tr-1 on as they are ok spec.
I'll be fitting r888 when the toyos wear out they have only done 100 miles and brand new but wish I'd bought the r888's first as I don't do many miles and have a decent amount of bhp to get down.

I think it's all subjective to your wheel specs, your car and ultimately what you are after. With a conservative offset and little to no lowering or fender rolling, 195/45/15 or 185/45/15 on a 6.5 wide would be fine. Heck, there have been Mk1 owners that prefer 195/50/15. At the same time, if your vehicle is at risk of rubbing, there are folks who swear by 165/45/15 tires on 6-7 wide. Lots of choices. Fortunately, lots of info and pics are out there to make the right choice for what you are trying to achieve.

Thanks guys. Standard 1.6gti so bhp is not an overwhelming problem. 165 too skinny for me any one have pics of 195 on this size rim as I don't want a large bulge bad enough with my own middle bulge don't need the car tyres match me.

Completely overlooked you didn't want 165.

Mine going lower when my lower arm correction kit comes today, the lower arms are already pointing up which effects handling.
How come you going back up?

First of all I decided on the 195/45 toyo. £200 delivered from black circles with the wheels being refurbished and powder coated for £30 each including the tyre fitting and balancing. Hopefully collecting in a week or so.
Now suspension. It is on coil overs and a pain in the ass as I have to slow to a crawl for speed humps and any other minor lump in the road. There is zero give which is great for the track but I only use it on the road so will be changing to lowering springs and spax or similar in place of the coil overs. Still be dropped but hopefully raise me by about 20-25 mm from current height.
I have 3 pricey jobs to do now the wheels are in motion
Fit the stainless 4 branch and have a new stainless exhaust fitted
Replace the water pump, thermostat and hoses
Do suspension.
Will have to be water pump next then decide on exhaust or suspension after that. Hopefully by this time next year they can all be completed.

Can't you just higher the coilovers and adjust the damper setting?

What's you arch to wheel centre measurement?
I'm at 320mm front and rear on that photo but it sits better on level ground

Have not measured it to be honest. I like the look just not the useability hence only looking to raise about an inch.
Coil overs were on the car when I got it and about 10 years old so not sure how much life is left in them or even how to adjust pressure. But may investigate as only considered them for rude hight change and not pressure reduction and could save a few quid while I am at it.

If they have adjustable damping it will be on the top of the piston on the front shocks.
By raising coilovers it will allow them to have more travel which can also lead to a better ride.
I'd explore it as it's free.
