The final word on so called mk1 golf 'postal service' rear lights

Post

>In england they are commonly refered to as 'post golf rear lights'.
As they are here, too.

>Why do people think they come from postgolfs?
Thats because the "Bundespost" ordered the cheapest Mk1 available for their fleet.
And those Golf, in early price lists refered as "Golf N" had no virtually no extra, so no reverse lights.
So that is that far a proper conclusion - but i found proof, that the "Bundespost"
ordered the Golf always with some essential extras, as 2nd rear view mirror (right side),
gas pressure spring for the tailgate, and (surprise) white reverse lights.
To this suits, that i never ever saw a picture of a postal mk1 without reverse lights,
but also the oldest pictures of them show white reverse lights.

>Why would vw make these lights without reverse lights
At that time, those were not required by law in germany.
To keep the price low, VW offered cars without reverse lights,
no gas pressure spring (tailgate), no adjustable headrests, no clock, not chrome but grey painted bumpers,
no rear window washer, smaller inner door handles, cheaper seat fabrics,…
(endless list), knowing, that at the end of the day,
most people would pay more to get those extras, anyway.
But the starting price for advertisements would be low.

The wider rear lights without reverse lights were only built from mid 1980 to mid 1981 in really "basic" cars, so they are rare now.
In 1981 after the factory holidays VW introduced the "C" "CL" "GL" models,
and all of them had reverse lights, so the orange/red rear lights vanished.

I do not try to look smart or to be a "smart aleck" (Googled that word  …),
just wanted to mention weird facts.
In order to develop a "Telephone Service mk1", as it really could have been driven in the 80s,
i am digging for informations since 2005 to keep my facts straight, and there are still things coming up.

Of course the wider orange/red rear lights are nice and rare, so if you find some, go ahead mounting them.
