Erm, do you have a CAT?

I thought all clippers were carb models?

2" is abit bigger than normal, 2.5" is about as big as you can go without hitting the beam and tank and having many issues when things move about during driving.

2 boxes is quieter, single box is noisier and 'raspier' I'd go for twin silencers on a cabby as the noise through the boot is very annoying when cruising otherwise.

But I am old………………..  O_o

Get rid of the CAT if you can, they are expensive if you do have to get a new one at a later date.
I believe they also restrict the performance.

I thought the the last of the Cabriolet fitting with a CAT are digifant fuel injection?
FYI "Clipper" cars are the Carburettor 1.8 that is why there is a little confusion at the start of this thread. You have a GTi cabriolet.

Briano1234 in the USA has removed his CAT so perhaps we will hear from him?

No dumpy box just a straight through pipe like pre 1992ish Gti cabriolets.

Book figures.

95 bhp with a Cat
112bhp without a Cat.

7 bhp increase with just removing a Cat…..

If I was to take the insides out of mine so it was straight through I should get the same increase and at least if they look for it on MOT it's still there what you think

Yes, I have deleted the Cat on one of my Cabbies as the Emissions isn't required on it any more.  I have a 4-2 g60 Manifold and a TT tuning SS dual down on it, they are a pricey pair….

On my 93, I have one more Emissions to go, then I will install a SS Raceland Cat Delete Header on it.  :)

When I first got back into Cabriolets/Golfs my 90 had a CAT, but it was a cheapie and Hollowed, as it had broken up internally, and shot out the Muffler….

So you can remove your CAT (if factory, then it unbolts.) and Hollow it out as take a stick and beat the internals out….

What I found is that if I bought the 150 dollar Cat, they would blow out at 1.5 years and I was replacing them…
If  bought the 70 dollar cat it would blow out about 2 weeks after the emissions.  I didn't want to buy the OEM @ 350-400 USD but after 3-4 cats… well maybe I should of.

What I did to overcome this was to cut both my cabbies exhausts exactly the width of the new cat.

I used 2 Stainless Steel Band Clamps that Wrap the Exhaust pipe. Google them. I insert the Cat in the clamps and well instant emissions cat.  After the Emissions I remove the Cat, and replace it with a straight pipe between the band clamps… They make reducing clamps that is 2" on one side and 1 5/8 or 1 1/2" so you can usually get what you need….

These are about the only clamp I use now.

So I cheat the emissions a tad, but I used the same CAT on 2 different Cabbies for about 8 years, and the Cat was only on long enough for the tests.. maybe I had about 8 days on the same cat.

I don't see as much of a HP difference in cat/nocat.
But I did see a whalloping 200BHP (seat of the pants) when converting from a Single Down to a Dual down, and 300 BHP when I converted from a single down to a Header on my 90…. :)

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Your car is just on the year when CAT became law, I had a 1992 (J reg) Honda Civic Vtec which had a CAT fitted new, when the exhaust rusted away I fitted a performance exhaust with no CAT and I had no problems passing an MOT the few years I had the car with no CAT fitted, this was about 4 years ago.
Might be worth talking to an MOT person to find out what the current requirements are?
