ROOF REPAIRS!! HELP :-)

Post

Hello all,
I purchased a lockable roof handle for my golf mk 1 rivage cabriolet. Firstly I realised that the one I broke was the lockable one but the one on the drivers side was not a lockable one. Anyway i have since sourced another lockable one but am now having problems fitting it. I am attaching it by putting the roof down and then screwing the two black screws on that face upwards and then finally screwing the inside larger screw. But i am finding that the lockable roof handle is not locking so i cannot close it tightly/at-all. Is there a special technique to fit the lockable handle?

Finally does it matter if one of my handles is lockable and one is normal? the reason I broke the lockable one was because i tried to tighten them as had lots of judering when going over bumps etc.
i presumed that by decreasing the movement in the silver hook that it would kep things tighter. Obviously I did it too tight and snapped the handle. Should I keep them both the same or is it ok to have one lockable and one not?

Any thoughts/tips/idea's what is going on?

All help is appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Hi mate

Its should be ok to have one lockable and one normal. Like you say the silver hook is used to give a firm close when the hood is shut. You have to remember the metal is roughly 20 years old now and repetitive opening and closing the metal will fatigue.

Might be worth checking your roof seal around your windscreen?

Cheers Hugh.

Shouldn't be any reason why it won't lock down.
Does the handle operate normally when not latched into the pillar mountings?

Have you undone the silver collar and adjusted the J hook, to get it to lock down?

Usualy there are 4 threads showing above the collar.

Thanks for your help guys.

Turns out the part I was fitting was also broken - also due to overtightening - so have contacted the seller and he has a spare non-locking handle for me. I am very keen to keep the whole car original and by keeping a non-locking handle on the passenger side goes against my mentality but I am only hearing stories on here of lockable ones breaking so I am going to play it safe and fit my non-locking one part when it arrives with me hopefully tomorrow.
