original road test figs for Mk 1 GTI 1.6 ( 110 PS 4-speed ) ?

Post

Does anyone have any reference to definitive original road test figs for Mk 1 GTI 1.6 ( 110 PS 4-speed ) ?

The figs from the test in Autocar ( w/e March 12, 1977) seem rather lame by comparison with modern machinery

They give 0-50: 7.4s 0-60: 9.8s 0-70: 14.3s 0-80: 19.3s

30-50 (3rd): 6.3 s 30-50 (4th) 9.8 s 50-70 (3rd): 6.9s 30-70 (4th) 11.4

I'm making comparison in road test of modern Polo 1.0 TSI (110 PS) and the poor old GTI doesn't look very good at all, based on those Autocar figs (although we'd have to consider Autocar road tests to be pretty definitive ? )

Any info please to Neil.Birkitt@autometrix.co.uk Ta Neil B ( Editor, Volkswagen Driver magazine )

( unfortunately the original VW Audi Car mag which tested the GTI 1.6 in Sept 1982 didn't publish a very comprehensive set of figs, just 0-50: 7.1 and 0-60: 9.3 and no in-gear times )

Oh and on a cross country blat I think my daily 1.5 75hp Diesel Fester would give the GTI a good run for its money.

185 Diesel donkey torques vs the 1.6 GTIs 96.5. Never a good sign, measuring power in 0.5s……..

Thanks for the info    :-)

Being beaten by a turbo-petrol 1.0 Polo is one thing, but by a diesel Fester…!?!   :-(

Clearly the 0-60 time needed a change into third

A good book to get is this one…

VW Golf GTI - Limited Edition Extra ISBN 1-855-20674-9

It has all the road and drive  test results of all the cars in that period. Its the book in the middle of the three.

You need to remember though that when you drive the Golf you create extra drag by the big smile on your face!
