Hi All

Do you have any recommendations for oil pumps or is the £32 one from heritage parts as good as any?

For every person you ask, you'll likely get a different answer based on whatever good or bad experience they've had.

If I've looked at the same one as you, then Heritage's offering is 'Topran'.

Reputable enough maker and perfectly good stuff in my experience, target the cheaper end of the market and priced accordingly which isn't to put them down in any way for that but equally you tend to get what you pay for.

Is your old pump dead or are you replacing it because of age / mileage for example?

If so and it's the original VW pump and you can, remove it and take it apart before committing to replacing.

There is an excellent walk through on how to do it on this site somewhere. It'll also show you how to check for wear / tolerences etc.

If it is a VW one and there's no reason to replace it I'd keep it in in preference to a lesser quality new one.

I bought a Febi pump for my MK2 simply because it was at the recommended mileage to do so (75000 off the top of my head), but when compared to the existing VW one it was clearly a few notches down in quality,.

I took them both apart and there were already witness marks on the Febi's inner casing caused by the rotors rubbing but none on the original plus the older one was still well with tolerances.

On the other hand I got a Mahle water pump for the same car (out of necessity that time as the original had gunked up) but it was at least on a par quality wise with VW's so not a hard and fast rule.

Shop around if you're needing a new one … just as an example, Autodoc are doing the Topran for under £25 (less post) at the moment. I realise they get a bad press depending on what you read but it's just an indicator of how prices can vary for the same thing.

I'll see if I can find that link and post it up for you.

Thank you.  Just got the car and oil light is flashing occasionally. Also there's  a buzzing type sound from nearcthe dash. I figure for what it costs put a new pump whilst changing the oil. I thought there might have been a decent uprated one by now but struggling to find one if there is. Lots of cheaper k es about though.

The oil pressure electronics in the dash (the L board) are reknown for giving false warnings. I'd get an oil pressure guage and see if the pump is failing.

1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I've had a faulty buzzer relay on my mk2 with DX back in the day, stripped the bottom end to fit a new pump and bearings only to find it was all perfect!

Proper and full diagnosis can save you time and money, so as Early-1800 said above, I'd get a gauge and check the oil pressure before loading the parts cannon!

If you go the Vdo route make sure the gauge and sender are for the same range, 5bar or 10bar
