Non permanent mounting of front wings

Post

Good morning :)

Almost ready for the front panels to go back on.

I was thinking about avoiding the permanent fitting of the front wings with sealant and just using the stock screw locations. Possibly converting to riv nuts to avoid corrosion at the screw nut  locations.

It's much nicer to just remove the bolts and detach the arches to do work.

Does anyone run there front wings like this and what precautionary measures do you take to avoid friction and noise where the panels meet the body? I think I will use a 3m style tape to isolate the panel.

I don't intend to off road or drive in mucky conditions. The car really is for fair weather and will be stored in a nice dry garage.

What are peoples thoughts and experience?

Thanks

Rich

Do you not intend to use the big plastic arch liners/guards?   I try not to use any of my cars in the rain, but ive been 100 miles from home and got caught in an absolute thunderstorm. What im trying to say is if the cars going to get used its bound to get wet / muddy despite best intentions..

Yes I will be running arch liners :)

I don't run the arch liners on the cabby and tbh never had any trouble. I did add lots of stone chip to the inside though.

I also wondered about removable wings but couldn't quite see a way to make it work due to all the fixings along the door edge.

I've just bolted my front wings on my  Mk1 Scirocco without any sealant or anything and they don't make any noise or rattle.

I've also had to take 1 front wing of my Mk1 Golf Cabriolet and did not bother using anything when bolting it back on.

Both my cars are not up to your standard so some sort of tape might help protect your paint but I expect over the noise that engine will make you won't hear the wings rattle, it will be your house windows when it's running

I would be cautious about using foam between the joints as it will hold moisture and encourage corrosion.

A solid runner strip/gasket would be better but hard to find thinner than 1.5 mm.

Issue you have then is fit and alignment.

Also consider stainless or brass bolts to help prevent them becoming rusted in.

I would do this myself but need 2 new wings and a new bonnet ideally as although looking tidy they are held together with filler and fibre glass.

Also consider quick release wiring for the front indicators or stubby bumpers as you will be taking that off every time you remove the wing.

Thanks guys for the comments :D

Rubber gasket and stainless bolts

I will probably move to stainless rivnuts then rather than the original screw type.

Will get some pics up in the build when I'm ready 😉

Thanks Ian,

I don't mind that it's not quick release as want to keep it looking fairly stock.

Just trying to avoid sticking the wing back on. So nice to just take it off and avoid any damage to it when working in the hub area.

I've ordered up some closed cell neoprene strip at 1.5mm. Just need to convert the stock mounts to stainless riv nuts to avoid corrosion with stock fittings.

If your cars not going out in the wet and live in a nice warm garage I can't imagine the standard fixings rusting away over night, I have the original fixings on my Golf and my car is a daily and lives outside in all weathers, they are not rusty…

Just belt and braces, I have all the stuff and it doesn't take much work to do :).

What is it with me and double posting at the mo. Sorry belt and braces wasn't the correct term to use. More aesthetically pleasing.

Don't get me wrong I'll use it, it's not going to be a trailer queen. Will probably get washed after every trip though lol

I hear you. Doing things just because you can and will . Nothing like a bit of over engineering for the sake of it.

Nothing like a bit more weight at the front using stainless fitting on an already front end heavy bay

Perhaps titanium bolts in the future when I feel a bit more flush.
