saw a tidy mk2 the other day, which left me to speculate whether there are more mk1’s around than mk2s, taking into account cabbies and caddy’s there must be, …thoughts ?

Mk1's or mk2's

Still a load of mk2 out there. 16v, 3 door and 5 door.

However as there is a very high focus on mk1 golfs then the 2 is likely to die out before the 1 is my guess. Now is likely the time to buy a very good original car and store it away. As the rest become donors or dust then it will go up in value.

Happily stand corrected by those with a more informed level of knowledge.

Be interesting to know how many tin top Mk1's vs tin top mk2's there are.

I've had a few very clean, almost factory fresh mk2's in my life, never had a Mk1 as clean…. never had enough money.

The Mk2 Gti have increased in value a lot over the last few years as I keep an eye on them, I've had a couple over the years and they are great cars, compared to the Mk1 better feeling brakes, quieter, more comfortable,  bigger inside.

I would like another but I can afford one now, no longer can you get one under £700 with 12 months MOT and when you would get 12 months road tax, under 120,000 miles, some service history and lots of paper work, 1988 small bumper version with power steering, electric window on all 4 window, central locking, sun roof, digifant fuel injection, just the 8v in Helios blue like the last I bought 7 years ago.

MK2s are now like T25s were to T2s (Bays and splits). They were the poor (cheap) relative but now that MK1s have got expensive, MK2 Golf have become more desirable and expensive. Just like T25s did

Personally think that as a daily a MK2 is a better bet, easier to find in good condition, better corrosion resistance, availability of PAS, 5drs in GTI form, bit bigger but not too large, safer in the event of the worst etc but still contains the basic DNA of what made the MK1 practical and so much fun.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.
