mk1 golf rebuild HELP!!

Post

im in a muddle, please have a read!

hi all. right were in the middle of a rebuild of my mk1 gti project. its come from a rolling shell and boxes of bits. ive finally managed to get a wiring loom from evil bay, which im certain is from a mk1 due to it being the right length to pass through the bulkhead on the passenger side. this loom has MFA (which i didnt realise any mk1s had, so i guess its a very late loom?), and lots of the plugs dont seem to match up with the car and whats on the engine (stock 1.8 8v engine). they also dont marry up to the brake servo (servo has 'on off' inputs per say, and the loom has an 'on off switch' built in to go at the pedal. there is a temp sensor(?) to go with the rad but i dont have a sensor. the wiper motor plug from the loom is completly different, plus a couple of other ones too

im in a quandry what to do here. do i try and find another loom, and if so which sort of loom do i try and find? is it possible to get it adapted from how it is? can the MFA be stripped out, and if so completely or does it need to stay in for something else to function? are very late mk1/mk2 parts fairly interchageable to get round some of the plug issues? do i try and find another servo instead and have all new brake lines made up again?

ill add some photos as soon as i can get my phone to play ball with my computer!

if anyone can help in any way at all it would be brilliant!!

I may be mistaken here but is that a connection for vacuum operated central locking maybe?

im not sure, did any mk1s have centrally locked boots?

Not that I'm aware of but due to nothing else seeming right with the loom it could be off a different model altogether that was fitted with central locking.

Hello, sounds like its a mk2 loom, no mk1 was ever fitted with a vacumn operated central locking loom!

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause :)

yet its the right length to go through the bulkhead on the passenger side, and (from memory) a mk2 one wont as it goes through drivers side.

the pipe is still under the factory tape so its not an after thought

Rubjonny would probably have a good idea what's going on with it.

so according to the haynes manual the only loom with a brake switch like that is from a westmoreland built car.....

pedal switch is also on late mk1 cabrios and scirocco. might be a scirocco loom with the black rear cluster plug (mk1 usually white) plus the loom tape as mk1 only have the plastic tubing over the looms. the roccos also had option of central locking so that would explain the pipe.

mk1 cab have individual spades for the rear cluster so it wont be one o those

more pics needed ;)
