mk1 1.6 - does anyone know what this part is?

My MK 1 Golf 1.6 was turning over but not starting - turned out the fuel was not getting through and a mechanic has isolated the problem to the fuel reserver - this is seems to be a small cylinder filter between the fuel pump and carb. The part isn't carried by any of the vw parts companies I've spoken to - does anyone know where to get hold of this part or whether there's another solution? Or if this is the name of the part?

its the fuel vapour seperater. water from condensation is separated from the fuel here so it doesn't go into the engine. what carb u using?
