If you had asked the question about a non GTI. Mk1 8 or so years ago then you would get a very different answer to today.

Guess for me it depends how long you want to keep onto it and how happy you are to keep standard.  Prices for Mk2's seem all over the place at moment, the £8k plus for GTI's seem to stick for ages but very similar looking cars for around half price seem to fly away. A ongoing  long term purchase and kept well could go up % wise closer to GTI's, but the good original spec GTI is going to be the next VW to take off (along with Corrado) price wise.   Can only seeing non GTI's catching up when all the Good GTI's are gone our out of reach price wise.

My thought is if driver with PAS then a much better buy, people are okay with a Mk1 being unassisted but even heavier on a Mk2 and I think a PAS mk2 is a much more usable classic.

Sadly non-GTI MK2s, even mint ones don't seem to make a lot of money. I guess anyone after something mint wants a GTI and anyone else wanting non-GTI is probably wanting a cheap car for insurance.

It's a shame as there's still quite a few great examples out there but they struggle to make four figures it seems.

Number of doors and colour seem to make a difference in price too, personally I wouldn't pay any more than £2000 for a 'mint' one. I payed £1200 3 years ago for a 3 door capri green driver 79000 miles and 5 owners, was a very tidy car but not quite mint.

Non GTI? And sell? or be advertised for that much? I've watched a few lately and they seem to struggle. Fair play if you can reach that amount though

the last one i watched did,

i thought about putting in a bid until it went way up.

i'm sure it had 42 watchers and about 20-30 bids

it was low miles and mint.

the same car could be listed a month later and only get half the price, its the luck of the draw on ebay and whos looking.

Yeah true it varies from day to day. It's nice to see them as appreciating classics though
