Is it normal for temperature to fluctuate in city traffic?

Hi all,
I've been trying to diagnose a fluctuating tempareture issue with my car. The temperature gauge rises from the middle position at idle to about 3/4 the way up the gauge, but once I get moving again So far I have flushed the system and replaced the thermostat to no avail. Thermo fan works ok too. The temperature gauge doesnt reach the 'danger' zone but I just dont like the way it rises so often. Is it possible its just natural for Mk1s the way the temperature increases in traffic?
Sorry about the strangeness of the question - I live in Australian and Mk1s are rare so I dont have any other Mk1 owners to ask or compare cars with.

Mines the same - on the odd really hot day we get here will creep upto nearly 3/4 and then fan brings it down to just under half way point.
If you leave your engine ticking over for up to 10 mins listen for the fan cutting in and watch the gauge go back down. On a modern car I don't notice the gauge moving much - fan probably cuts in earlier.

Ah that relieving to hear! I spent my weekend taking apart the thermostat and flushing the system and was worried my pump was broken.

Replace your fan switch with a new one even if it is still working. With age they tend to kick in later and later. Cheap part and worth the piece of mind. Since replacing mine my temp is remaining around 1/2 mark in traffic.
